Sealed in Silence: A Deadly Silence Short Story
Carly BlackWelcome to Deadly Silence, a multi-author collection of chilling short stories where every pause hides a threat. Crafted to make your pulse quicken and your nerves tighten, these thrillers and light horror tales uncover the terror that lurks in the quiet, waiting to be noticed—or ignored.
Derby City Paranormal Investigations has been chasing evidence for years. Most cases end with logical explanations and disappointed clients. Hillcrest Sanatorium might finally be different.
A ball that moves on its own. A girl who appears only through camera lenses, pointing with desperate urgency at something they can't see. Financial ledgers that don't add up. Patients marked deceased who somehow kept receiving treatment for weeks afterward.
Brooke Caldwell and her team follow the evidence deeper into the abandoned hospital's crumbling halls. Every answer leads to darker questions. What they discover has been hidden for over six decades, buried by people who'd do anything to keep their secrets quiet.
Some silences were never meant to be broken.
But the dead don't always stay quiet when they have something to say.

This was a really great and intense short strut. Loved how quickly I got pulled. The secrets and the things that had been hidden over the years, just wow. Really loved the paranormal aspect. For being a short story it really held a lot of depth and description.

As soon as I opened this book and page one enticed me in to this haunting paranormal thriller I was hooked.
A spooky fast-paced short story that fills the reader with emotions of sadness over the disturbing events that took place several years before.
Derby City Paranormal Investigations have been looking into paranormal activities for years, some easily explained, others have ghostly happenings
They happen upon Hillcrest Sanatorium, long since closed down and a dilapidated building, they just might be in luck in finding a haunting.
Brooke and her team,Mandy and Jed have their equipment all set up ready, when out of nowhere a ball appears and rolling across a room that seems to be directing them to certain places within the building.
Through the lens of a camera, an apparition of a very distressed looking young girl appears and is pointing to parts of the building, something's there they cannot see. She leads them to some old paperwork, and ledgers that ahow fraudulent activity and suspicious deaths, the dead are no longer silent and calling for the team to help in unlocking the dark truth of fraud and many deaths.

Set within the chilling walls of Hillcrest Sanatorium, the story follows a young girl silenced while trying to expose the truth—and the deeper you go, the heavier that silence feels. Each perspective is layered with raw, almost suffocating emotion. You don’t just read what the characters are going through; you feel it crawling under your skin, their fear and desperation lingering long after each chapter ends.
There’s a quiet darkness woven throughout the story that builds into something deeply unsettling. By the time you reach the ending, it doesn’t just hit—it lingers. It’s emotional, haunting, and leaves you with that hollow, aching feeling that only the most powerful stories can deliver.
A fantastic quick read that doesn’t hold back, this installment in The Deadly Silence Collection is both chilling and unforgettable. Perfect for readers who crave something eerie, emotional, and impossible to shake.

They connect with a “spirit” of a little girl who is trying to help them find out the corrupt things she had happened there. They end up finding a lot of corrupt things that happened there and had reported it to the police so finally some families can get justice.
I’ve read several stories in this book and they’re all amazing

What truly stood out to me was how deeply I felt everything. The chills, the curiosity, the sorrow, the outrage - every emotion was heightened without ever feeling rushed. The pacing is razor-sharp, the mood deliciously eerie, and the underlying message hauntingly powerful!

For a short story, this one sure packs a punch! As the story unfolds, I found myself right in the middle of the chaos with Brooke and her friends. I wanted to solve it as badly as they did!
If you’re looking for a chilling tale that creeps up your spine and whispers “just one more page,” look no further!

ARC Review – Release date: April 1st, 2026
Sealed in Silence by Carly Black – A Deadly Silence Story
First: thank you for this ARC. And thank you to Inside Story for once again handing me a book that quietly crawled under my skin and decided to redecorate.
This isn’t just a short story. It’s a claustrophobic whisper that slowly tightens its grip around your ribs. Paranormal thriller? Sure. But it’s also about the kind of human cruelty that doesn’t scream — it hides. It festers. It protects itself at all costs.
There are secrets in this story layered so thick you can practically taste the dust. And the scariest part? The monsters aren’t always the ones without a pulse.
What hit me the hardest is this idea: spirits don’t leave when they have something left to say. They wait. They linger. They are patient in ways the living could never be. And when someone brave (or foolish) enough decides to listen? Truth doesn’t knock politely. It kicks the door in.
There’s something devastating about a lost soul being just that — lost. Trapped. Locked away in more ways than one. And when that truth starts unfolding through a small group of people willing to step into the dark? It’s uncomfortable. It’s heartbreaking. It’s necessary.
How does it unravel? Why did it happen? Where does it lead?
I’m not telling you. Absolutely not.
Just know this: don’t read it alone. Or do. But maybe keep a blanket nearby. And your emotional support animal — rabbit, cat, dog, snake, emotionally detached goldfish, whatever gets you through. You’re going to feel her. And once you do, she doesn’t really leave.
Five claustrophobic, truth-dragged-into-the-light stars.
Every word earned it.
