Hushed Tones: A Deadly Silence Short Story
Danielle FearWelcome to Deadly Silence, a multi-author collection of chilling short stories where every pause hides a threat. Crafted to make your pulse quicken and your nerves tighten, these thrillers and light horror tales uncover the terror that lurks in the quiet, waiting to be noticed—or ignored
Kirsty has spent her life learning how to speak again.
In her mid-thirties, she works quietly at a remote vineyard, tending vines that ask nothing of her past. When a private wine tasting is booked under the name of her childhood bully, the life she rebuilt begins to fracture. Old silences stir and old choices return.
What begins as coincidence becomes confrontation. And what follows is a reckoning steeped in ritual, restraint, and consequence.
As wine is poured and power shifts, Kirsty must decide whether justice sounds like forgiveness, or something far more permanent. But when the vineyard's owner returns, grieving and watchful, she discovers that survival may depend not on what she did… but on whether her silence is a weapon or a weakness.
A psychological thriller short story about voice, control, and conditional love.

Danielle Fear takes us straight to a quiet vineyard where the air smells like crushed grapes, old earth, and secrets that never stayed buried 🍇🤫. Kirsty is a protagonist you feel in your bones. A woman who rebuilt herself one careful word at a time, choosing silence not because she’s weak—but because it’s how she survived. Her character development is slow-burn, deliberate, and devastating in the best way. Every choice she makes carries weight, and when her past walks back in wearing a familiar name, the tension tightens like a cork being pulled real slow 🍾😮💨.
The plot is lean and sharp—no wasted space, no filler. What starts as an uncomfortable coincidence turns into a reckoning steeped in power shifts, ritual, and consequences that linger like the last sip of a bold red 🍷. Danielle Fear’s writing style is restrained yet loaded, elegant but ruthless. She knows exactly when to whisper and when to cut clean. The psychological tension hums, the silences scream, and the payoff? Whew 😮💨 Absolutely satisfying in that sit-still-and-stare-at-the-wall kind of way.
I’m a huge Danielle Fear fan, and this one just proves why. If you like your thrillers smart, atmospheric, and quietly savage, this is for you. Do yourself a favor—and when you’re done, don’t forget to come back and check out the rest of the Deadly Silence stories, because this collection deserves your time 🖤📚

Yes, the cork will pop with professional ease. The bouquet of the wine will be delightful. The sommelier will provide a scripted origin story of the grape, or they may even go off-script. But you will never know what they are really thinking.
This is a story of the lasting effects of bullying, of a woman who survived her childhood, who put in the hard work to learn to talk, to come to work in a place where she feels safe. But then, by fate, or wrong place/wrong time, she discovers her childhood classmates are due for a wine tasting. Which wine she chooses will depend on them.
And the ending might leave you in tears.
The Locksmith by Danielle Fear lodged under my skin, so I jumped at the chance to read this. And now I want to read Danielle's entire backlist because...she's that good

Hushed Tones by Danielle Fear is the kind of short book that quietly gets under your skin. Despite its length, it manages to prompt a surprisingly deep level of self-reflection, especially around choice, consequence, and the parts of ourselves we prefer not to examine too closely. It’s the sort of story that makes you look inward and wonder what you might be capable of under the right — or wrong — circumstances.
The premise is compelling and handled in a way that pulls you in quickly without wasting a word. The plot centers around a major decision and the ripple effects that come from it, exploring how a single turning point can reshape everything that follows. What makes the story so effective is that it doesn’t just focus on dramatic consequences — it also highlights the quieter losses, the small things we often overlook before making life-altering choices. By the end, the book leaves you with the sobering realization that the things we thought we were missing before may have actually been far more valuable than what remains after everything changes. In that way, it feels both intimate and unsettling.
Fear does a great job creating an atmosphere that feels tense, thoughtful, and emotionally sharp. For such a short work, it carries real weight, and it lingers after you finish.
The only reason this isn’t a full 5 stars for me is simple: I wanted more. The story, themes, and emotional depth were strong enough that I would have loved for it to be longer and even more fully explored.
If you enjoy short books that leave a lasting impression and make you think hard about human nature, consequences, and regret, Hushed Tones is absolutely worth reading.

This book is one of my favorite thrillers of the year! It is so original and exciting! It’s a fast read, but has an extensive storyline.
Kristie works at a winery and is in charge of a wine tasting event while her boss is out if town. Kristie recognizes the names of those coming for the tasting, from her childhood, and she does not have fond memories of them. How will she get through this tasting event?

I can't even begin to give you a summary because I know I will include spoilers.

What elevates the story beyond a simple revenge thriller is its devastating epilogue, which changes everything in a way that's both shocking and elegant. The final twist is a gut punch. It asks whether revenge ever truly break a cycle. The story is lean and efficient, but that restraint is also part of its power. For fans of dark, fiction with a psychological edge, this is a memorable read.

It was a great story about Kristy who was bullied by a group of kids when she was in high school and she is now working at a winery and they are coming in. Her boss has to leave to Italy to attend a family funeral and leaves her in charge.
They arrive and realize they know who she is and trigger the past she has worked so hard to forget, then their whole world changes, then Kristy’s does too!

I love how this story reminds us that all of our actions have repercussions.
“I think of my voice. What it cost to get it back. There are choices here. I can feel them, branching and narrowing, each one leading to a different version of myself. None of them are clean and none of them are simple.”

Danielle has once again put the fear into her writing. Short story but pact with a full length novel storyline missing nothing.
Kirsty was bullied all through school for the way she spoke, which ultimately made her go mute, until years of therapy helped her. She even has a job at a vineyard and has a booking come through by her old classmates. Will this tasting bring a happy reunion or one of blood?

Kirsty, working in the quiet isolation of a remote vineyard, stumbles across a name on a reservation list—one that instantly drags her back to the darkest corners of her high school years. Fear does a fantastic job capturing that rush of memory: what Kirsty endured, what she clawed her way out of, and the complicated tangle of emotions that surface when the past suddenly walks back into view.
For such a short story, the tension builds beautifully, and the ending lands with a force you absolutely don’t see coming. It’s sharp, satisfying, and exactly the kind of twist Fear excels at.
A quick read, but a powerful one. Perfect for anyone who loves character‑driven suspense with a sting in its tail.
