Whew! This one hit a little closer to home than I expected.
Deadly Kiss follows a therapist who finds herself on the receiving end of an unfaithful husband. Imagine spending your days helping other people work through their problems, only to find yourself dealing with the very same heartbreak and betrayal in your own marriage.
There was so much in this story that I could personally relate to. The lies, the betrayal, the excuses we make for the people we love, and the struggle of finally realizing that sometimes loving yourself means walking away from someone else.
One thing I really appreciated was the repetition throughout the story. Some readers might find it unnecessary, but I think it serves a purpose. That repetition carries weight. When you're trying to rebuild your life after someone has completely torn it apart, healing isn't something that happens overnight. It's day by day, sometimes hour by hour, and sometimes literally minute by minute. You have to keep reminding yourself that you deserve better until one day you actually believe it.
And let's talk about the unconventional way she decides to help the wives of the couples she sees? Because I absolutely loved that part! Is it a little unorthodox? Oh, absolutely! But that's what makes this story so interesting.
One of my favorite quotes from the entire book was:
βI refuse to be a victim of people who cannot even meet the lowest standard of being human.β
That right there! I felt that one. Because there comes a point when you have to stop allowing other people's actions to determine your worth. You can't control someone else's lies, betrayal, or cruelty, but you can decide what you're willing to tolerate.
And I think that's what I loved most about this story. It's not just about an unfaithful husband or a marriage falling apart. It's about a woman finding herself again, even if the road she takes to get there is a little darker than most.
Lies are born from weakness, and sometimes the people who hurt us the most are the very ones who teach us just how strong we can become.
There's a sentiment in this book that really stuck with me. People might say she snapped, but I see a woman who finally found her wings and soared.
Ivy Blackwell delivered a dark, emotional, and surprisingly empowering story that definitely left its mark on me.
Well done!!!
