The Fluttering Cage is dark, raw, and had my attention from the start! It's the kind of thriller that yanks you straight into the FMC, Rebecca’s unraveling life. Joan drags both her and the reader into a nightmare that feels terrifyingly real, and what follows isn’t just survival; it’s a fierce reclaiming of power.

What makes it hit so hard is watching who Rebecca is forced to become in the aftermath — the unexpected allies, the strength she didn’t know she had, and that quiet, simmering rage sharpening into something unstoppable. Its gritty, relentless, and impossible to look away from.

This is exactly why I love Joan’s writing. She doesn’t just craft thrillers — she builds women who refuse to break, who rise harder every time the world tries to crush them. Her heroines have grit, fire, and a depth that sticks with you long after the last page. Rebecca is no exception, and Joan delivers her with the kind of intensity that keeps me coming back to every book she writes.

A man named Frank offers her a ride. Weary, she is hesitant until Frank’s companion, Aiza, steps out of the car and extends the same offer. What could possibly go wrong? Once in the car, Rebecca’s life changes forever. Will she end up like a butterfly in a cage or will she fly away?

I’ve read several of Joan’s stories and she definitely knows how to draw you in quickly and ramp up the tension. The story is gritty and brutal, but never gets bogged down by either. The writing is as sharp as a knife and the tension zings through you like a bullet. Definitely a great read!
