Not A Word

A Deadly Silence Short Story

Kay Elem

When a captive wakes bound and blind in the back of a moving truck, silence becomes her only chance to survive.

Escaping into the woods doesn’t mean freedom. It means the game has begun. Hunted through darkness and driven by a promise to her sister, she learns quickly that sound can be deadly, and every mistake is remembered.

Not a Word is a claustrophobic psychological thriller about silence, survival, and the terrifying cost of being heard.

Not a Word. That’s for the woman who woke up at the back of a truck, finding herself captive by a stranger. She finds an escape, or did she just fell into a trap? Her only source of hope, her sister Jessi. Will she make it? Will she see her sister again?

Not a single breath. That was for me. This might be a short story, but the thrill was so real that I can’t believe I was holding my breath for so long. (About the last two chapters). I was just reading, but it felt like I was the one running, hiding, fighting to survive the night. After reading it, my heart rate was at its peak for real.

Heart pounding read! Will she escape her captor? She stays silent fearing her captor will find her as she runs for freedom. She hides, hoping she won't be found. Not A Word escapes her lips.

A woman wakes up in the back of a moving vehicle and realises she is tied up. Panic sets in, but she quickly decides that staying silent is her only hope!

She manages to escape into the woods, and the chase begins. She is driven by thoughts of her sister and soon learns that any sound she makes could lead to her demise....

I enjoyed this story, it was fast-paced and full of heart-pounding moments as this woman runs for her survival. Even in pain, she can't utter a sound. Stuck in small spaces? No, not a word. This book is what nightmares are made of 😱.

Thanks Kay, your writing is descriptive and had me feeling the intense atmosphere and fear.

Thanks also to Inside Story for the opportunity.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ARC Review

A wonderfully written short story that captured my attention straight away. Even with the limited length, it delivered a strong plot, great pacing, and a surprising amount of depth.

I was fully invested from start to finish, and the writing made it easy to connect with the characters and the emotion behind the story.

A brilliant, bite-sized read that proves short fiction can still hit hard. Five stars.

Bound and trapped in an enclosed space; the epitome of nightmares. The lucid dream doesn't end there. Instead you find yourself running through the woods, barefoot and alone. Hunted, for sport like an animal, by a faceless stalker. "Not A Word" delivers incredible tension with non-stop impact. I blew through each page, biting at my nails in anticipation of where this tale would take me. Mix in a splash of family love and now you have a high stakes chase. Will she survive to see them again? Dig into this quick and satisfying read to find out.

While I have read 2 other stories from this short story series, this one fell flat for me. Maybe it is because of just how short this story is, or maybe it is not having very much context of what is happening. Either way, it was a decent 10 minute read; it just didn't have that 🫣 vibe for me.

This was a short, very fast paced read. I really enjoyed it. It's a fun adrenaline packed game of cat and mouse with a shocking ending!

You feel life the mouse who finally gets the cheese only to find it's laced with poison!

A woman wakes up and finds herself trapped and fighting for her life. Through twists and turns, she attempts to dodge her captor in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

I enjoyed the tension and the character building. I felt every step the character takes and every bit of dread landed in the pit of my stomach. The author is very good at building scenes and pulling you into the action.

For me, I wanted more by the ending. It felt a bit rushed and I read the last couple of chapters a few times so I could follow along. I felt a bit confused by the ending, but that could be what the author was hoping for. I tend to like stories where the ending is wrapped up a bit neater, but that's just a personal preference.

About the Author

Hi, I’m Kay!
My work lives in the space between tension and emotion with dark edges, quiet dread, and moments that hit a little too close to home. I love characters who unravel, themes that ask uncomfortable questions, and stories that don’t let you walk away unchanged.

I'm also an avid reader, lifelong overthinker, and inexplicable rabbit enthusiast.
