Originally released as "The Man Behind Closed Doors" in 2020.

Rereleasing as “The Married Couple" in August.

This book is an utterly compelling and twist-filled domestic thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

The story centers around Paul, an abused man, who has been through the wringer in his marriage and then is accused of mųrdęring his wife, Michelle.

As the story unfolds, we are drawn into a web of secrets, lies, and unexpected curve balls that challenge our perceptions of guilt and innocence.

Maria masterfully crafts her characters, making them feel real and relatable. Paul, in particular, is a complex character whose journey through grief, accusation, and the quest for truth is both heart-wrenching and captivating. Michelle's character was exhausting and frustrating up until she met her demise.

The book’s pacing is impeccable, with each chapter revealing new layers of the characters’ lives and the secrets they harbor. The suspense is intense, and just when you think you have figured it out, Maria throws in a twist that will leave you reeling.

What sets The Married Couple apart is its ability to keep you guessing until the very end. The unexpected twists and turns make it a rollercoaster of emotions, and the final revelation is both shocking and satisfying. I had quite a few different theories of who and what happened, lol. Although, I came close I was shocked by the ending!

Maria’s writing is engaging and immersive, and made it difficult for me to put the book down. I want to commend Maria on bringing light to domestic abuse at the hands of a woman and the blatant disregard to the man being abused. I love Maria's writing and love every book she has written, but this one has become my favorite! Highly recommended!

What the hell did I just emotionally survive?

I swear, every single time I pick up a book by Maria Frankland, I think I’m prepared. I’m not. I’m never prepared. She reaches into places I didn’t even know had feelings stored there and just… squeezes. Hard.

And knowing this was her first? Knowing the road she had to take to get here? That just makes it worse. Or better. Or both. The respect I already had? Doubled. No—tripled. The woman didn’t just write a book. She carved it out of something sharp.

This story made me angry. Not mildly irritated. Not “oh that’s frustrating.” I mean the kind of angry where you finish a chapter and just sit there staring at the TV that isn’t even on. Restless. Needing to talk about it. Having no idea how.

Because here’s the thing: this book dares to flip a narrative we’re all used to. We’re conditioned to see domestic abuse a certain way. And yes, women are often victims. But men? Men don’t talk. Men don’t come forward. Men are supposed to “handle it.” This book walks straight into that uncomfortable space and refuses to tiptoe.

And Paul. Oh Paul.

I didn’t just read about him. I became his shadow. I followed him everywhere. I felt his confusion, his shame, his quiet unraveling. I wanted to shake him. I wanted to protect him. I never once felt like he was the villain of his own story. If anything, he was trying too hard to outrun something he couldn’t name.

And that ending.
Was it a surprise? Maybe a little.
Did it wreck me? Absolutely.

The first word out of my mouth after the last line was: “Why?”
And not in a bad way. In a gutted, hollow, I-feel-slightly-ill-but-also-deeply-moved kind of way.
I wanted to cry. I didn’t. I just sat there, emotionally trapped inside a story that refuses to let me go.

So yes. Five devastating, furious, slightly unwell stars. Because I’m still mad. Still thinking about it. Still not ready to leave that world.

If you want something dark, twisty, and painfully familiar in ways you don’t expect… if you’re okay with a story that might leave you uncomfortable and unsatisfied in the best possible way… then welcome.

Just don’t expect to walk out the same.

About the Author

Maria Frankland
Maria Frankland has a dubious internet search history and a very worried mother-in-law. However, neither of these things can stop her writing gripping psychological thrillers in which you’ll never find a happy-ever-after.

Her novels are mostly set in Otley in Yorkshire where you’ll hear the accent through all her characters. These are people you could live next door to, or closer still… don’t say you haven’t been warned.

Maria’s novels are fast-paced, down to earth and realistic. You never know what’s around the corner…
