The Uninvited by Nadija Mujagic

When it comes to The Uninvited, you will find it to be a gripping domestic thriller that grabs readers’ attention from the very first page, merging suspense and psychological intrigue into a captivating tale. Mujagic is a master when it comes to the pacing of a story. What starts out as a slow-burn quickly turns into fast-paced action. But don’t get overconfident thinking you’ve got it all figured out because as soon as you do, she delivers a shocking plot twist that leaves your jaw on the floor.
The story revolves around newlyweds Jack and Emily Ross, who upon their return from their honeymoon in Hawaii find Jack’s mother waiting on their doorstep. Evelyn Ross missed their wedding due to recent heart surgery, so the question stands, how is she on their doorstep? Evelyn’s arrival sets off an unsettling chain of events unraveling an intricate web of deception, manipulation, lies and secrets galore leaving the reader grasping at straws to figure out what is happening.
As the story unfolds, we discover that nothing is as it seems, and everyone has secrets they have been keeping, demons lurking about. Jack becomes restless and angered easily. The hostility between Emily and her MIL, Evelyn, rises quickly. Emily and Jack’s relationship becomes strained – the tension between the two is crushing. Emotions are running rampant among the Ross house leaving the reader doubting everything they’ve learned so far about the characters. Regardless of how we feel about the characters it cannot be denied that Mujagic creates characters that are full of depth, while intriguing and infuriating all in one with their own flaws and problems.
The Uninvited is a compelling read that will keep you guessing until the very end with its thought-provoking incidents and unexpected plot twists. The only part that didn’t resonate with me was the very end, as I felt the final reveal was kind of a let down compared to the rest of the story. But overall, I would def recommend you adding The Uninvited to your TBR.
As always, all opinions and reviews are of my own volition. I have not been promised any compensation by the author, present or future, for my review.

Really enjoyed this book. Read it in a few days as I wanted to know what would happen to Emily. A few twists throughout but I thought I could see the twist at the end coming but I was wrong. Love a book that surprises me! Fantastic!

This gripping novel expertly weaves domestic suspense with psychological intrigue, keeping readers hooked from start to finish. When Emily Ross returns from her honeymoon to find her enigmatic mother-in-law, Evelyn, unexpectedly at her doorstep, the tension is immediate. What starts as an awkward family encounter quickly unravels into a complex web of secrets, lies, and manipulation, leaving readers questioning everything they think they know about the characters.

Mujagic masterfully builds the suspense, layering subtle hints of unease as Emily grapples with Evelyn’s unwelcome presence and Jack’s strained, mysterious relationship with his mother. The gradual uncovering of long-buried secrets is both shocking and inevitable, drawing readers deeper into Emily’s increasingly unstable reality. Just when you think you’ve pieced it all together, Mujagic delivers expertly crafted twists that will leave you stunned.

This is a chilling exploration of trust, betrayal, and the dark complexities of family ties. A must-read for anyone who enjoys stories that linger long after the final twist!

Firstly, I'd just like to say thank you to Nadija for the advanced copy of this book. It's an absolute privilege to be given a free copy with no expectation of a positive review.

The pacing of the story is perfect. Straight away we're introduced to newlyweds Emily and Jack, who upon arriving home from their honeymoon find his uninvited mother on the doorstep with her luggage!

It's Emily's first time meeting her MIL Evelyn, and she lives up to all stereotypes of being an obnoxious and unwanted presence from the outset. Nadija weaves suspense throughout the narrative, teasing with secrets that keep you on edge throughout.

I enjoyed reading from both Emily and Jack's perspective as we tried to work out which secrets were unravelling and whose grip on reality was the loosest. The characters were well-developed, and the revelations wrapped everything up neatly at the end.

This is my first time reading one of Nadija's books, and I really enjoyed her writing style. A solid 5 stars from me.
