The Order - A Deadly Silence Short Story
Tiffany RoysterKindred Wrenley and Phoenix Crawson are hailed as survivors after fleeing an underground nightmare no one can find. The town believes they are broken. The police believe they are brave. By all appearances, they are healing. No one questions the quiet rules Kindred and Phoenix live by.
When Sonnet Clove vanishes and fear seeps back into the town, Kindred and Phoenix offer their help. They remember what waiting does to a person. Every step closer to the truth pulls them deeper into a darkness that feels disturbingly familiar. Silence starts to feel safer than the truth.
Someone is still hunting. And someone is listening.
In this dark psychological thriller, trauma becomes a language, and survival comes at a cost no one sees coming.
Once you enter the silence, you do not leave unchanged.

Kindred and Phoenix carry their trauma like a second skin, and Tiffany uses that tension beautifully. The atmosphere is claustrophobic in the best way—quiet rules and unspoken fears.
I thought it was a good story overall. It’s tight, eerie, and emotional, delivering a surprising amount of depth for such a short read. It leaves you with that lingering, uneasy silence the title promises.

This story starts off fast and doe not stop. It’s intense and dark. I was very invested in this book but then it was over. I was left with many questions that weren’t answered because it was a very short read. Don’t get me wrong though. I loved the whole concept of this story and would love another one to answer my questions and see where Phoenix and Kindred end up.

Kindred and Phoenix have been missing for weeks. They managed to escape. The police search for the bunker they escaped from, and can't find it. It's like it has disappeared. More people start to disappear and the police have no clue. I enjoyed it.

Very short chapters that arises questions throughout the storyline and wonder what really happened in the woods. Where in the dark the silence was born and grew into something they couldn't deny anymore. I did not see the twist at all. I do wish it had a little more explanation as to how they got the way they became.

I think this would be better as a novella. Other than the victims to hunters trope, I didn't really understand why they were doing what they were doing. I needed backstory and maybe an explanation from Phoenix to Kindred as to why they had to keep doing this.

“The Order – A Deadly Silence Short Story” by Tiffany Royster is a quick but intense read that wastes no time pulling you into its darkness. From the first page, there’s a constant sense of unease that lingers and builds, making it impossible to relax. Tense, unsettling, and sharply written, this story proves that even in a short format, Royster knows how to leave a lasting chill.

The order is not a bad short story but it left me confused and feeling like I was missing something.

This is the 4th book I have read in the Deadly Silence Story series. Much like the previous one I read, I feel if there was just a bit of context before the beginning, the ending would make sense. The way it is, makes some things a little confusing at times. A decent, very quick read, I feel by maybe adding something before chapter one, giving the story just a glimpse of what happened to those 2 prior to being in the woods, would help immensely.

This short story was so eerie. I had no idea where it was going. It did have me a bit confused for awhile but the ending made up for it.

The Order by Tiffany Royster
First of all—thank you for this ARC. Truly.
And also… thanks for ruining silence for me forever.
This is a short story, yes. Short in length. Not in impact. Not even close. This thing crawls under your skin, sits there quietly, and waits. Which, turns out, is exactly the point.
The silence in this story isn’t empty. It’s loaded. Weaponized. It breathes. It watches you. It judges your life choices. The tension builds so slowly and so deliberately that by the time you realize you’re holding your breath, it’s already too late. You’re in it. Trapped. Obedient. Listening.
The writing is meticulous. Calculated. Every word feels placed with intent, like moving a chess piece while staring directly into your soul. I didn’t just read this—I experienced it. I could feel the quiet. Hear it. Taste the fear creeping in. And yes, fear can settle. It can sit down politely beside you and refuse to leave.
And then there’s this line from chapter four, which has decided to live rent-free in my head:
“Quiet was not the absence of sound. It was the presence of control.”
Excuse me while I stare at a wall for the next hour.
Five stars. Non-speaking terms. Full silent cheers. Because when a short story can do this—make silence feel louder than screams—it’s earned every single star.

The Order is a deeply unsettling psychological thriller that explores what happens when trauma ravages its victims.
What makes this story so disturbing is its slow-burn transformation. Royster doesn't rush the shift, instead, she carefully traces how silence, trauma, and twisted dependency can corrupt. Using minimal dialogue, Royster creates an oppressive sense of dread. The recurring motif of silence as both survival mechanism and weapon is well executed.
The story's greatest strength is its unflinching examination of the cycle of abuse. Phoenix's descent feels terrifyingly inevitable, and watching Kindred struggle is genuinely tragic. The therapy group setting adds an extra layer of horror, the very place meant for healing becomes a hunting ground.

A gripping short story with a dark, haunting atmosphere that pulls you in immediately. The concept and characters are strong, and the tension builds so well that I couldn’t help thinking how brilliant this would be as a full-length novel. Even in a short format, it delivers suspense, emotion, and a chilling edge. Really enjoyed this one.
