Manspreader

~Marnie Vinge

Let’s talk about a word that’s not only expanded my vocabulary but also cracked open a whole new way of thinking.

Manspreading - as defined by the internet - is an informal term referring to the act of a man, particularly while in public, sitting with his legs wide apart, thereby encroaching on the space of others nearby. If manspreading is the action, then the manspreader is the offender.

And that, friends, is your vocabulary lesson of the day. Now buckle up - because this story? It’s a wild, unsettling, unforgettable ride.

Honestly, I’ve stalled on writing this intro because I’m still trying to reconcile the brutal, unapologetic narrative I just read with the author I once met - a woman who seemed so kind and sweet. But this book? It’s like the demons were given a pen and permission to scream.

Fair warning: I’m struggling to do this book justice - hence the procrastination.

One seemingly ordinary afternoon, Claire Redgrave (FMC) finally loses her composure and snaps. She’s on her usual bus ride home from work when the man beside her spreads out, legs pushing into her space, deliberately dismissing her presence. Claire politely asks him to move. She even tries the sweet approach, pointing out his invasion of her seat. But he makes it painfully clear - he doesn’t care. His expression says it all: What are you going to do about it?

“I’ve never thought myself capable of violence before this afternoon.”

And with that moment, something inside Claire breaks.

What begins as a calm confrontation quickly spirals into a personal mission - a twisted path of vigilante justice. As bodies begin to drop, Detective Love is put on the case, determined to track down who is leaving a trail of dead men - and taking trophies - across the city.

Will Claire slip up and be caught? Or will she continue flying under the radar, exacting revenge on self-entitled men who have wronged women for far too long?

Manspreader is a razor-sharp, emotionally charged tale of revenge. Vinge crafts Claire’s evolution with expert nuance - from a quiet, compliant woman into a force of nature driven by fury and liberation. A woman who has been silenced, harassed, body-shamed, gaslit, and broken... until she decides enough is enough. Unlike most of us, Claire doesn’t swallow her pain - she acts on it.

Her mission is brutal. Her purpose is righteous. Her methods? Unforgiving.

This is a story for every woman who’s ever been talked over, touched without consent, dismissed, or threatened. Claire doesn’t just reclaim her voice - she becomes an avenger for others who’ve suffered in silence.

The novel tackles dark, triggering themes - date rape, stalking, gaslighting, child loss, toxic relationships, and more - through a raw, unflinching lens. We don’t just read about Claire’s trauma; we feel it. Vinge doesn’t shy away from the ugliness, and the result is a deeply resonant portrayal of a woman’s breaking point.

Told in punchy, fast-paced chapters, Manspreader is a quick read that draws you in and doesn’t let go. Vinge’s writing is seamless and emotionally immersive, pulling readers into Claire’s psyche and keeping them there. You’ll root for her, fear for her, and - at times - question your own sense of morality (and possibly sanity).

Claire is the antiheroine so many women have been waiting for.

First and foremost, your mental and physical health is your priority. If you ever feel that you are not safe – whether it be at work or home – there is help out there. Please get help and be kind to yourself.

But let’s be clear: this book is not for the faint of heart. If you’re sensitive to violence, psychological trauma, or explicit content, I strongly recommend reading the trigger warnings first. For the right reader, the ones who thrive on dark themes and psychological thrills, this book should be moved to the top of your list for release day, May 26, 2025.

At its core, Manspreader is a bold, feminist take on the vigilante thriller. It doesn’t ask whodunnit - it asks why she did it and how far she’s willing to go. Claire’s journey is one of unmasking, reckoning, and reclaiming power in a world that constantly tells women to sit down and shut up. But to go even deeper, Vinge brings about resonations with more than just women, all around who endure these societal ideologies can relate in one way or another to the emotions and feelings of vindicated justice Claire doles out.

Vinge redefines the female serial killer trope with a fresh, brutal twist. Claire doesn’t kill for pleasure - she kills for every woman who’s been told to smile more, for every whispered threat, for every unwanted hand, every short skirt lifted and thigh felt. Her vengeance may not be justifiable, but it’s deeply, viscerally understandable.

In the end, Manspreader is a cathartic scream into the void.

And now, for the part I didn’t need to overthink: GET THIS BOOK. If you’re craving a psychological thriller soaked in rage, justice, and bloody satisfaction, this is the read you’ve been waiting for.

Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I would like to extend my thanks to Marnie Vinge for allowing me to ARC for Manspreader.  As always, all opinions and reviews are of my own volition. I have not been promised any compensation by the author, present or future, for my review.

Manspreader is a gripping psychological thriller that taps into everyday frustration and turns it into something explosive. Claire’s slow-burning rage is relatable and raw, and her breaking point is both shocking and powerful. Marnie Vinge delivers a fierce, fast-paced story about what happens when a woman stops staying small. A must-read for fans of dark, revenge-fueled thrillers!

4.5 rounding up.

We've all to some extra anger going around these days and this was a fun place to let it out and live vicariously through Claire. Her frustration felt real and her escalation felt justified (enough) to have me rooting for her all the way.

The addition of chapters for Detective Love were a nice touch too (though at least one wasn't labeled? and it took me a moment to realize we'd swapped povs)
