Fourth Wing
Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders from New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Yarros.
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general--also known as her tough-as-talons mother--has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.
But when you're smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don't bond to "fragile" humans. They incinerate them.
With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother's daughter--like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.
She'll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.
Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.
Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda--because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.
Performed by Khaya Fraites, Gabriel Michael, LaMont Ridgell, Taylor Coan, Torian Brackett, Rob McFadyen, Laura C. Harris, Jessica Lauren Ball, Robb Moreira, Megan Poppy, James Konicek, David Cui Cui, Crystal Lee, James J. Johnson, Henry W. This book had its moments, but overall, it was just alright. I noticed that it seemed to draw "inspiration" from several other books and movies. The beginning was a bit of a slog—juvenile and unnecessarily drawn-out. It took way too long to reach the "good parts."
I listened to the audio version, but unfortunately, the female narrator didn't do the story justice. Her performance was distracting and detracted from the overall experience; frankly, she was downright annoying. I understand the hype surrounding it, especially for fans of the fantasy genre, but the spice scenes felt excessive and made me roll my eyes. Yes, we get it—their connection is cosmic, but it came off as silly rather than impactful.
The plot was also quite predictable, borrowing heavily from familiar narratives. However, things did pick up a bit after Chapter 30, with some engaging moments sprinkled throughout. I enjoyed the bonus chapters from Xaden's point of view and found myself invested in the characters, appreciating the unique perspectives each brought.
In the end, it was a mixed bag. Despite the rough start and unnecessary fluff, it entertained me. If this is your jam, I love that for you. Overall, it was just "meh" for me. 3/5 ⭐

I think I left off somewhere between 50-60% mark. I will try to come back to this one and read it. I just have to be REALLY in the mood for a fantasy. Thought I was getting into it once the dragons appeared, and then lost interest, felt like it was more of a chore to read this than for my enjoyment.
I do plan to try and pick it back up though!
Update: Left off at Chapter 32
