Cass passes a stranded car on a rural winding wooded road late one night in the middle of a storm but does not get out to help the woman who is stranded in the car. The next morning she wakes up news that the woman was murdered there that night. She tries to forget about it but she keeps blaming herself for not getting out and trying to help the woman. The more she thinks about it, the worse she feels. And then she starts forgetting things. Then she begins receiving calls from an unknown number every morning but they don’t say anything - they just breathe. Despite her husband Matthew’s insistence that the calls are just telemarketers, she knows they are the murderer. She thinks that he saw her license plate when she pulled over that night but didn’t get out of her car and now he is trying to mess with her head. The calls are relentless. Soon she is forgetting about lunch dates and gifts she was meant to purchase, and company that she herself apparently invited over for lunch. Her life spirals out of control. She relies on her friend Rachel who she grew up with and Rachel reassures her that everything is fine. But it’s not.
This was another fun, fast-paced book. I knew something wasn’t right and that someone was doing something to Cass but until that little black phone turned up …
