Uninhabited

The Blair Witch Project meets Fyre Fest in this bloody new thriller from the queen of scares, Darcy Coates!

It was supposed to be the party of the century: miles of idyllic white sand beaches, lush jungle foliage...and a dark legend nobody dreamed might be all too true.

When an online influencer and several hundred of his most loyal fans land on Prosperity Island, the plan is simple: five days of elaborate games, drinking, and suntanned fun.

A week in paradise should have been a welcome respite. The only survivor of an infamous cult, Ruth wants nothing more than to keep her head down and not draw attention. She's spent decades outrunning her blood-soaked childhood, and her identity is a closely held secret.

But then the true history of the island is revealed...along with its sinister connection to Ruth's past. As guests go missing and games turn deadly, Ruth and the rest of the attendees are forced to question whether they've really been invited to paradise...or whether something much darker--and far bloodier--is waiting for them just beyond the bonfire's light.

I don’t know how she does it, but I’m always drawn into Darcy’s stories and this one is no different. When a content creator buys an island in the Caribbean and holds a festival including huge signature games, you just know something is going to happen. As the author ratchets up the tension, the blood starts to splatter and we can only sit back and enjoy the ride!

When a strange cult tightens its grip on a terrified town, things spiral fast. The question isn’t if something bad will happen, it’s how bad can it really get. One woman finds herself caught in a nightmare she never expected, trapped between survival and something much darker. Secrets unravel, terror builds, and survival feels less likely with every page.

Spillin’ the Book Tea:
Okay, let’s just start with this. I will never be the same after reading this book. I knew from the title this was going to be messed up, but this messed up? Darcy Coates really said, “Let me ruin your lunch and your trust in small towns forever.”

This was my first book by Coates, but it won’t be my last. This book kind of eases you in with a slow burn setting the scene. Then BAM! It is not ok. Then things keep escalating until you’re gripping your kindle, wondering if your stomach is going to hold. Spoiler: I was glad mine was empty.

It’s hard to pin this down to one genre because it hits mystery, thriller, and horror all at once. Cult books are either a hit or a total flop for me, and this one? Solid hit. The dread seeps in slowly but once it gets going, there’s no turning back. It’s disturbing in the best possible way. And yes, the question posed by the title? The answer is really freaking bad.

If you think you’re prepared, you’re not. Thank you to Poisoned Pen Press, Darcy Coates, and NetGalley for the ARC and the opportunity to provide this candid review.
