Audra Hart finally escapes an abusive relationship, but her healing journey isn’t easy. Late one rainy night, she turns up on Roman Dawkins’s doorstep, soaked and shaken. Roman, her best friend’s brother and longtime crush, can’t help but protect her. As they navigate Audra’s past and the secret they share, a spark grows between them. In a small coastal town they must decide if risking their bond is worth chasing happiness.
This debut by Jensen Kate hit me right in the feels. Audra is the grumpy half of a classic grumpy sunshine trope and she’s fully human. I felt every drop of her anxiety and trauma. You really get to know her inside out. Roman is such a cinnamon roll. He’s caring protective and just what Audra needs. The chemistry has that touch her and die energy but it never goes over the top. I was smiling at their banter and swooning at his gentle kindness.
Also I loved how Jensen Kate handles heavy topics. Audra’s panic attacks and flashbacks feel real because they are treated with tenderness and honesty. Plus the pace kept me turning pages. It’s sweet spicy and while I wish some scenes ran a bit longer I still had to give it a solid four stars. I read my ARC for free and I’m already looking forward to more from this author.
