Do Not Disturb

"Quinn Alexander has committed an unthinkable crime. To avoid spending her life in prison, Quinn makes a run for it. She leaves behind her home, her job, and her family. She grabs her passport and heads for the northern border before the police can discover what she's done. But when an unexpected snowstorm forces her off the road, Quinn must take refuge at the broken-down, isolated Baxter Motel. The handsome and kindly owner, Nick Baxter, is only too happy to offer her a cheap room for the night. Unfortunately, the Baxter Motel isn't the quiet, safe haven it seemed to be. The motel has a dark and disturbing past. And in the dilapidated house across the way, the silhouette of Nick's ailing wife is always at the window. Always watching. In the morning, Quinn must leave the motel. She'll pack up her belongings and get back on the road to freedom. But first, she must survive the night"--

This book kept me guessing from start to finish—full of red herrings, layered secrets, and tension that made me question everyone. But despite the strong suspense, the inconsistency in character behavior held this one back for me.

At first, I genuinely believed the sisters had a strong, loyal bond. Quinn spoke about her sister with such reverence, it made the betrayal feel jarring—not shocking in a twisty thriller way, but in a this doesn’t quite add up way. The affair twist landed, but it clashed with the emotional groundwork laid early on.

Nick? Total wildcard. I had him pegged for something darker, especially tied to the first murder. So I was surprised to find him… mostly decent (well, except that kiss).

The shock value was there, but some of the emotional beats didn’t quite stick the landing. I wanted to love the reveal—but instead, I felt frustrated by how uneven it all felt.

I love a Frieda McFadden book. With building suspense, and twists galore Do Not Disturb is another very enjoyable read. You may think you know what's going on, but then she whips the rug out from underneath your feet! This was my third book by her and I look forward to reading more. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrators were fantastic.

This one was so so for me. It was fast and entertaining enough for the most part, I had sort-of pegged the mistress, though the 'unreliable narrator' there was a bit annoying as it didn't feel like denial so much as being purposefully misleading even in her own head? I don't love that, so when the 'reveal' came I was annoyed.

Up to the beginning of the 'reveals' I was happy enough, the story had tension (though a bit too much repetition) and I liked Quinn well enough despite her initial actions.

Didn't love it, didn't hate it, though the last several chapters (30ish pages even) could have been MUCH more condensed as we labored through explanations upon explanations of 'what really happened'
