"Stephanie Perkins is the reason we write romance. OVERDUE is the book her readers have been waiting for." —Christina Lauren, New York Times bestselling author of The Paradise Problem
Is it time to renew love or start a new chapter?
Ingrid Dahl, a cheerful twenty-nine-year-old librarian in the cozy mountain town of Ridgetop, North Carolina, has been happily dating her college boyfriend, Cory, for eleven years without ever discussing marriage. But when Ingrid’s sister announces her engagement to a woman she’s only been dating for two years, Ingrid and Cory feel pressured to consider their future. Neither has ever been with anybody else, so they make an unconventional decision. They'll take a one-month break to date other people, then they'll reunite and move toward marriage. Ingrid even has someone in mind: her charmingly grumpy coworker, Macon Nowakowski, on whom she’s secretly crushed for years. But plans go awry, and when the month ends, Ingrid and Cory realize they’re not ready to resume their relationship—and Ingrid’s harmless crush on Macon has turned into something much more complicated.
Overdue is a beautiful, slow-burn romance full of lust and longing about new beginnings and finding your way.

I found myself rooting for her even when she acted oblivious (which she does, frequently). Seeing her question long-held assumptions about love, identity, career, and home hit close. The romance is gentle, sometimes quiet, and it’s less about grand declarations and more about the whispers in her heart. Macon is a character I didn’t expect to love as much as I did—he brings softness, a steadiness, and respect. Even Cory, flawed as he is, is human in a way that refuses to be villainized.
What I liked most is the way Overdue treats growth as messy. Ingrid stumbles, retreats, rethinks. There’s no neat roadmap, and I loved that. But there were moments I wished for more clarity, especially in her relationships with family and friends. They sometimes felt a bit peripheral when I wanted them to be richer.
In the end, this book left me feeling warmed and thoughtful. If you like your romance with depth, introspection, and a hint of uncertainty, and if you believe a love story can also be a coming-of-age tale in disguise, Overdue will stick with you.
I was given a copy of this book from NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press. All opinions are my own.
