For this to be John David's debut, The Bystander is a good story following journalist Peter Lemaster. The pacing of the story was slow at times and some parts felt like words were just shoved in the page but overall the plot and concept was good.
I figured out certain angles early on (thanks to my love of crime shows) but the twists and turns will have mystery/thriller readers excited to turn the page and delve deeper into a conspiracy. The minor characters were well placed and added to the story's plot and gave Pete a sense of community. A good read for mystery lovers.

"The Bystander" by John David is an excellent debut novel that skillfully blends suspense with contemporary issues relevant to today's political climate. As a veteran, I found the themes surrounding veterans' affairs particularly resonant, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative.
The book is rich in dialogue, which really brings the characters to life and enhances their development throughout the story. The meticulous plotting keeps the tension high, making it a gripping read from start to finish.
Overall, it’s a well-crafted piece that leaves readers both satisfied and reflective. Highly recommended!
