What IS this?

I can only come up with 2 explanations for this book. Either Kerri Maniscalco was body snatched and we got her twilight zone double, or else she was in a horrible accident, suffered amnesia, and forgot her characters, her plot lines, and how to write in general because this sounds nothing like her prior books. Even the writing was dumbed down. Not a compound sentence to be found. I’ve read her Stalking Jack The Ripper series and KOTW, and the other Princes of Sin spinoffs and I liked them all. But this one- she did Prince Sloth dirty.

Firstly, her other Princes of Sin books all had linear plots. They had a clear objective, we got to know the Princes. In this book, the FMC is just a complete and utter ditz and rather than having some overarching quest, she essentially meets Sloth, who we literally get no backstory on, and then is transported to the Kingdom of Nightmares where she becomes the FMC in about 5 of her favorite novels. She’s having to escape all of these fictional monsters, yet she continues to choose novels that have horrific outcomes. Like getting chased by a giant wolf riding cannibal goblin. Or having to fight a dragon shifter or getting dragged to the bottom of the sea in a pirate novel by a monster called, I kid you not, an Omni-Pus. What. Like if you’re going to transport yourself into a novel, why not something nice. Or fun. Why to a novel where something is trying to kill you. The worst part is it’s like she forgets that all of her novels have bad parts. She forgot the whole plot or something.

Next, all of these novels she’s transported into… this book was clearly written for the BookTok girlies. KM covers basically every single Romantasy trope and makes no bones about it. We’ve got forced proximity. Fated mates, Grumpy sunshine. Rivals to lovers, time travel, reverse harem (mentioned, not seen,) and so many more.

And let’s talk about the ridiculous juxtaposition between the time periods her characters usually live in- some vague, old timey non technological period (let’s estimate late 1700s-early 1800s…) and now. She’s literally got Lore, the FMC talking about wanting to “embroider Team Morally Grey” onto her tunic, making statements like “time to show some main character energy.”
