Sisters. Strangers. Survivors.

More than twenty years ago, Claire and Lydia’s teenaged sister Julia vanished without a trace. The two women have not spoken since, and now their lives could not be more different. Claire is the glamorous trophy wife of an Atlanta millionaire. Lydia, a single mother, dates an ex-con and struggles to make ends meet. But neither has recovered from the horror and heartbreak of their shared loss—a devastating wound that's cruelly ripped open when Claire's husband is killed.

The disappearance of a teenage girl and the murder of a middle-aged man, almost a quarter-century apart: what could connect them? Forming a wary truce, the surviving sisters look to the past to find the truth, unearthing the secrets that destroyed their family all those years ago . . . and uncovering the possibility of redemption, and revenge, where they least expect it.

Powerful, poignant, and utterly gripping, packed with indelible characters and unforgettable twists, Pretty Girls is a masterful novel from one of the finest writers working today.

Pretty Girls is a brutal, uncompromising thriller that does not pull its punches—and that’s exactly why it’s a full 5⭐ for me. This story is dark, emotionally relentless, and meticulously constructed, with tension that tightens instead of letting up. The stakes feel personal, the revelations feel earned, and the emotional impact lingers long after the final page.

This is not an easy read, but it is a powerful one, and it rewards readers who can handle its intensity with a story that’s both devastating and expertly told.

If you like thrillers that are fearless, deeply unsettling, and impossible to forget, this one belongs at the top of your list.

Such an immersive and gripping thriller

There is so much going on in this book. I'd describe it as an onion with lots of layers that Slaughter expertly peels back inch-by-inch throughout the narrative as each layer reveals another connection or revelation. It's such an immersive read that I felt like a character in the book. The emotions at times are so raw that you have to stop to take a breath.

The story centres around two estranged sisters, Lydia and Claire, and their family's grief after the disappearance of their sister Julia 20 years ago.

I love Slaughter's dark, graphic style. This book is not for the faint of heart, as the crimes are depicted in detail. Her stories are so much more than that, though. You feel this book from every angle: a father's pain, a mother's loss, sisters grief, and so much more that I can't mention without spoiling the surprises!

The letters written by the father to his missing daughter were some of my favourite chapters. Without sounding corny, you can feel the love and loss.

The detailed chapters alternate in speed; sometimes I'd need to take a break to process the amount of information, and at times I couldn't read fast enough as the intensity ramped up.

Everything is not always as it seems. With another teenage girl missing, who can they trust? There's so many lies unravelling at every twist and turn. You take a path of discovery with Claire, and it opens doors that can never be closed ever again.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter

Wow. This one was dark, twisty, and absolutely impossible to put down. I finally understand the hype — Pretty Girls is everything you want from a psychological thriller and then some. From the very first chapter, you feel that creeping unease settle in. Slaughter doesn’t just write a story; she drags you straight into it.

The book dives deep into family, trauma, and the things people hide behind closed doors. The two sisters — both broken in completely different ways — are pulled back together by old wounds and new horrors. You can feel their tension, the love mixed with anger, and that constant ache of grief that never really healed. Slaughter captures it all perfectly — dark, emotional, and raw in a way that sticks with you.

And the twists… every time you think you’ve figured it out, she turns everything upside down again. It’s disturbing, yes, but in that addictive way that makes you keep reading. The pacing never lets up — fast, sharp, and full of that signature Karin Slaughter intensity.

Even though the story itself is heavy, it was an easy read for me — the kind you fly through without realizing how deep you’ve gone. Pretty Girls is gripping, haunting, and absolutely worth the read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — Pretty Girls van Karin Slaughter

Wauw.
