Steadfast

A novel in Mercedes Lackey’s bestselling series of an alternative Edwardian Britain, where magic is real—and Elemental Masters are in control.

Lionel Hawkins is a magician whose act is only partially sleight of hand. The rest is real magic. He’s an Elemental Magician with the power to persuade the Elementals of Air to help him create amazing illusions. It doesn’t take long before his assistant, acrobat Katie Langford, notices that he’s no ordinary magician—and for Lionel to discover that she’s no ordinary acrobat, but rather an untrained and unawakened Fire Magician.

Probably more like 3.5....

Oh Mercedes Lackey... kinda hit and miss and she has been for ages. Some of her work I LOVE and it's dog-eared. Some is boring and some is just kind of... there.

Steadfast is in the third group. There was nothing that really bored me or irritated me, but at the same time, it doesn't hold any of the spark that many others in the series do. The characters feel a bit flat, the story feels almost slapped together and the ending was too pat. Really, I would have preferred it to go the less spectacular, but more character satisfying route; then at least we wouldn't have the usual 'girl rescued by love interest' which seems all too common in this series.

It almost feels as though Mercedes Lackey has grown weary of this series and if that's the case, perhaps us fans should simply let it go and let her move on to other things.
