“Eye See You” delivers a dark and chilling premise with strong potential—a mysterious box unearthed in the Appalachian wilderness, a mutilated body, and a grieving FBI agent desperate for redemption. The eerie small-town setting in Stillwater creates an atmospheric backdrop that fans of backwoods thrillers will appreciate.
Agent Emily Slate is a character with emotional depth, still reeling from personal tragedy and professional failure. Her vulnerability adds a human element to the investigation and makes her a relatable protagonist. The mystery surrounding the unknown woman and the grisly details of the murder certainly keep the reader curious.
However, while the plot is intriguing, the pacing can be uneven. Certain sections drag with repetitive inner monologue or unnecessary exposition, while key twists feel rushed or underdeveloped. Some characters, including townspeople and law enforcement, fall into predictable stereotypes, missing opportunities for more nuanced storytelling.
The final reveal hints at a broader conspiracy but doesn’t quite deliver the punch it promises. Still, there’s enough tension and creep factor to keep mystery lovers engaged, especially those who enjoy FBI procedurals with a psychological edge.
Overall: A decent read with a strong setup and a haunting atmosphere, though the execution could have been sharper. A solid choice for fans of rural crime thrillers and flawed heroines.
