The Last Dragon King (The Kings of Avalier, Book 1)

An inter-connected romantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas

The Dragon King is looking for a wife...

The news causes a frenzy for the women in my village. The king will be sending out the royal guard to bring women of childbearing age to his castle in Jade City.

There is only one requirement: his wife-to-be must carry enough magic to produce an heir for him.

I know I won’t be chosen: I’m only human with a mere ten percent dragon magic lineage, but for some reason the magic sniffers command me to present myself to the king as a possible wife.

I’m ready to go to Jade City until my mother tells me a terrifying secret. A secret that could get me killed... by the king himself.

The Last Dragon King is book ONE OF FOUR in the Kings of Avalier series, featuring the Dragon King, Drae Valdren.

The Dragon King starts with an intriguing premise that immediately hooked me: a reluctant heroine, a ruthless king in search of a magically powerful wife, and a dangerous secret that could mean death if discovered. The concept of magic lineage and the forced journey to Jade City had strong fantasy-romance potential and set the stakes nicely.

That said, while the setup was compelling, the execution felt a bit uneven. The story moved quickly, sometimes too quickly, which made it hard to fully connect with the characters or feel the weight of their choices. I wanted more depth—especially when it came to the heroine’s emotions, her relationship with her mother, and the implications of her hidden secret.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read with a solid idea at its core, but it didn’t quite reach the emotional or world-building depth I was hoping for. Worth picking up if you enjoy dragon lore and arranged-marriage fantasy tropes, but it left me wanting more.
