Secret Santa by Elliot S. Clark

This was short.
No, really. Very short.

Secret Santa feels like the opening act to what could easily become a deliciously unhinged thriller—only someone pulled the plug right as it was getting good. Think: strong setup, sharp writing, ominous vibes… and then boom. Done. Roll credits. Emotional whiplash included.

Don’t get me wrong: it’s well written. Tightly paced. The tension is there, the atmosphere works, and you can absolutely tell Elliot S. Clark knows what he’s doing. There’s a creepy little premise involving holiday cheer gone wrong, secrets wrapped up nicer than Christmas presents, and that uncomfortable “something is very off here” feeling creeping in from page one.

But my dark little brain wanted more.
Much more.

I know, I know—it clearly says short story. That one’s on me. But there’s short, and then there’s “this took less time to read than I need to pee” short. Sorry. Too much information. But also… accurate.

At around 35 pages, this is basically a thriller espresso shot. You barely sit down before it’s over. I was just getting invested, mentally clearing my schedule to spiral properly, and suddenly I’m staring at the last page like: Wait. That’s it? We’re just… stopping?

That said—if you’re looking for something quick, dark, and efficiently unsettling to squeeze in before Christmas Eve (while dinner is in the oven or your social battery is already flat), this absolutely does the job. No filler, no nonsense, just a neat little slice of festive unease.

Three stars—not because it’s bad, but because it ended before my paranoia could fully bloom.

Still… I’d 100% read a full-length version of this.
Dear Santa, please make that happen.
