The story started out strong, drawing my interest quickly. I was greatly appreciative of the descriptive writing at first and found the darkness behind the atmosphere of the story intriguing. However as the story continued, I became impatient waiting for the story to develop. There are a lot of great characters that you either love or hate (I mostly began to hate them), but Clive Barker does a great job of displaying their true nature through the facade of their development as the protagonist gets to know everyone.
I began to really become distracted with the underlying implementation of sex and gore which should not have been a surprise but as it continued, it became more distraction than descriptive and did little to build on the characters or the story.
When the story finally began to gain speed again toward the end, I became sorely disappointed in the interactions of the characters and the culmination of a mediocre ending at best.
I'd say the book was not bad, but with it being well over 400 pages long, it was not the best use of my time.
