The Shadow
For thirty years, Ella has lived with a shadow no one else could see.
Hat Man has watched over her since childhood, appearing in the darkness whenever sleep paralysis leaves her helpless. He has always been familiar. Protective. Safe, in his own impossible way.
Until he stops simply watching.
As the distance between them disappears, their connection becomes physical, obsessive, and dangerous. Hat Man is possessive, jealous, and intensely protective, and Ella is beginning to realize she doesn’t want him to stop.
But when secrets from her family’s past begin to surface, Ella discovers their connection may have started long before she was born. A mysterious bargain, a terrifying entity named Vareth, and the sins of her ancestor Silas Mercer are tied to a debt that has finally come due.

If you are looking for a dark paranormal romance that perfectly balances a spine-chilling premise with an incredibly addictive love story, The Shadow by Ariel Turnage is an absolute must-read.
The book follows Ella, a woman who has spent thirty years tormented by a sleep paralysis entity. But the story completely transforms when this terrifying shadow entity shifts from a silent monster meant to take her away into her ultimate protector and lover.
What makes this book so spectacular is the incredible execution of the Hat Man's evolution. Watching a literal childhood nightmare transition into an intensely possessive, protective force who is fiercely soft only for Ella was easily my favorite part of the story. The author managed to take a genuinely terrifying concept and flip it into an unforgettable, high-stakes romance that felt completely earned.
Unlike many monster romances where the overarching plot gets lost in the spicy elements, the narrative here is incredibly strong. Ariel Turnage doesn't sacrifice the story's momentum; the pacing keeps you hooked, the stakes feel real, and the paranormal lore is gripping from start to finish.
This is the perfect read for anyone who loves obsessive, morally gray love interests, protective monsters, and a dark romance with a phenomenal plot. I couldn't put it down!
