Cat Dragon

'A new favorite! Completely charming and delightful! I loved every magical second!' Sarah Beth Durst, New York Times bestselling author of THE SPELLSHOP 'Cat Dragon is charming, gentle and all that a cosy fantasy should be!’ Lucy Jane Wood, Sunday Times bestselling author of Rewitched and Uncharmed 🍂🍂🍂

In the whimsical world of Tangleroot Valley, magic flows like the seasons, and every witch has her cat dragon – except Aloysia Papplewick.

She’s far from bonding with her fiery feline familiar, and with her magical farm in chaos, her prattling pumpkin patch meddling in her life and the annual Harvest Festival to prepare for, Aloysia has enough to handle – even before her best friend’s insufferable brother, Hollis, brings danger and distraction to her door.

When she and Hollis are whisked away on a quest to a mysterious mountain, Aloysia must contend with magic, mayhem – and a spark she never expected.

Embrace the magic as this delightful tale weaves a cozy spell of adventure, self-discovery, friendship and romance. For fans of Studio Ghibli, Harry Potter, The Spellshop and cottagecore.

As others have noted, a huge problem with this book is the pacing. It is jarring at times.

Which I could have forgiven. For the first 60% odd of this book, I was prepared to give it a solid 3.5. Not outstanding, but fine. Cool world, neat characters, cat dragons. I'm good with that.

However.

I am an author myself and I recognize when another author tries to jam two different plots into one novel and this novel has that very serious problem. First 2/3 or so: a fun if predictable light adventure cozy. Neat world (if a bit confusing as it cannot decide if it's an alternative earth or not, which only gets worse as the book grinds on), good characters, cat dragons.

But then they got to where they administer the cure to the Guardian and I look at my kindle and realize I still have over 100 pages left to go.

And this is where it collapsed. The last third made *no sense*, both technically (there were entire paragraphs that just did not make sense with the paragraphs around it) and plot wise. The entire adventure up the mountain was meaningless, Littlewick and Aly not bonding didn't matter, the vision the False Doll's Eye gave to Aly made no sense, and the new guardian, say it with me: made no sense.

And then she bonded with Hollis at the end, not Littlewick after all? I thought witches bonded with cat dragons?

Nothing about the last hundred odd pages worked with the first two hundred and fifty. It contradicted the world building, was drawn out pointlessly, and the ending made no sense.

If it had ended with the Guardian being cured and with an additional few scenes where her and Littlewick bonded OR it turned out Littlewick was the Guardian all along, (which still had me rolling my eyes but at least it made more sense than Crow ffs), then this still wouldn't have been anywhere near the best cozy fantasy I've read, but at least I wouldn't be furiously writing this review.

Cozy writers! You do NOT HAVE TO CREATE THREE TWISTS AND 400 PAGE NOVELS! It *never works*. Keep it warm, keep it simple, keep it fun.
