The Quiet Neighbor

A heart-stopping tale of family secrets, buried trauma, and the lengths a mother will go to save her child, even when that child might not want to be saved.

Cynthia Burrows thought she'd built the perfect life—successful law career, loving husband, beautiful daughter. But when eighteen-year-old Tori vanishes without a trace, Cynthia's carefully constructed world begins to crumble.

The school says Tori was excused by family. Security footage shows her leaving with an older man. And the boy she was supposed to date? His name sends chills down Cynthia's spine—Alexander Beaufort.

That's impossible. Alexander Beaufort is the serial killer who destroyed Cynthia's childhood, murdered her best friend, and forced her into witness protection twenty years ago. He's supposed to be locked away forever.

But someone is playing a deadly game, leaving clues that drag Cynthia back to her darkest memories. With only three days to find her daughter, she must confront the monster from her past and the shocking secrets Tori has been hiding.

In this quiet suburban neighborhood, everyone has something to conceal. And some neighbors are more dangerous than others.

Cynthia, David, and their daughter, Tori, have the perfect suburban life. Both parents have good jobs. They have a nice house. The neighbors are all friendly. Tori even has a favorite coffee shop where she stops and buys coffee for her friends. It's all like a storybook. However, one morning Tori vanishes and Cynthia's world quickly falls apart. In a desperate race against time, Cynthia will do whatever it takes to find her daughter, but ghosts from her past stand in the way. What happens when the past catches up and collides with the present?

I found the writing style for this book to be very engaging and the twists landed well for me. The book is told with multiple timelines and they are quickly weaved together to build a tapestry of secrets and lies that bind the characters and their actions together. The chase is on. Hold on tight.

The Quiet Neighbor by J.D. Barker & Adam Roach
Release Date: January 27, 2026

A daughter goes missing as dark family secrets begin to unravel.

This story alternates between past and present, building an atmosphere that’s both mysterious and full of tension. I was hooked almost immediately and found it hard to put down. While the twist didn’t completely surprise me, I think the authors left enough clues for attentive readers to piece it together. I’m curious, did you see it coming?

Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for the advanced copy. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
