The setup for this story is compelling—a summer by the lake in 1976, a teenage girl with an unsettling gift, and the ominous sense that tragedy is waiting just beneath the surface. Daphne Ann Post is a character weighed down by guilt and secrets, and her struggle to fit in while fearing another death should have made for a gripping read.
Unfortunately, while the premise held a lot of promise, the execution fell short for me. The pacing dragged in places, and the tension that should have built steadily toward the climax often felt uneven. The lake setting was atmospheric, and I did appreciate the eerie undertones and hints of danger, but the plot never fully delivered on the suspense I was hoping for.
Overall, it’s an intriguing concept with some good character depth, but for me, the story felt flat where it could have been truly chilling and immersive.
