I went into Parents Weekend by Alex Finlay with high hopes, expecting a tightly woven thriller full of tension, twists, and a satisfying conclusion. Unfortunately, this one didn’t deliver for me.

The premise is promising, and Finlay has proven in the past that he knows how to keep readers on the edge of their seats. But in this case, the execution just didn’t land. The narrative felt overcrowded with too many characters and subplots, making it hard to stay invested or even keep track of who was who. Rather than enhancing the story, the multiple threads made it feel drawn out and disjointed.

Pacing was another struggle. The story dragged in places, and despite my efforts to stay engaged, I found myself waiting for something—anything—to truly hook me. By the time we reached the climax, the ending felt rushed and unearned. I was hoping for a shocking twist or at least a strong payoff, but what we got felt more like an afterthought than a conclusion.

Overall, Parents Weekend had the bones of a solid thriller but ended up feeling more like a missed opportunity. I wouldn’t call it a total loss, but it definitely left me disappointed.
