What a wild ride! Matt Pines returns to his dorm room after a late night of partying to find FBI agents awaiting him with the devastating news of his family’s death in Mexico while on a trip. His mother, father, six year old brother and seventeen year old sister have all been found in what at first appears to be a tragic accident in a Mexican hotel room but later appears to be a carefully arranged murder. The case makes headlines because this isn’t the first time the Pines family has been in the news- years ago, Matt’s older brother Danny was accused of murdering his girlfriend Charlotte and is currently in jail serving his sentence. His family and especially his father Evan has spent years trying to prove Danny’s innocence and there was even a true crime documentary about Danny’s case spurning conspiracy theories and touting Danny’s innocence. Matt hasn’t spoken to or seen Danny since he was sent to prison. The one thing that Matt has never told anyone- he saw something the night Charlotte was killed that made him believe Danny really was guilty and so he stays away.
This book was fantastic with fabulous writing, lots of drama, and turns that kept me guessing. The book is told through different alternating characters at different time periods (past and present) so it gave perspective. I loved the Misfit Toys- Matt’s group of friends- especially Ganesh. Matt was a terrific character too and very interesting. I love this author Alex Finlay and I’ve read several of his books but I think this may be his best! 5 star read for me!
