I’m surprised this was a debut, M.E. Mullen came out of the gate strong with this one. From the first page, I was hooked by Del’s character and the quiet menace hanging over her return to Belclaire. What she thought would be a short trip back turns into a deep dive into everything she tried to leave behind; murder, family secrets, and a whole town that hasn’t forgotten who they think she is.
Ten years ago, Del ran. Now her mom is dead, her sister’s gone, and people are side eying her like she brought the trouble with her. There’s a ton of tension between her and the people she left behind, especially the detective on the case, who also happens to be her ex. (Yeah. That kind of messy.)
This one’s got small-town drama, unsolved crimes, and just the right amount of slow-burning suspense. It’s not scary, but it’s definitely eerie. I flew through it and didn’t want it to end. If you’re into secrets, Southern settings, and stories where nothing is quite what it seems, this is definitely worth picking up.
