This book teaches me to really pay attention to every little change in your loved ones, and then do something about it. Luke is the example of a man making a big move to help his wife find the shining light that used to stand between their love, the light he hasn’t seen in Marie for years. I love what he does for his wife and kids. Not just in the way he arranges the surprise for Marie, but also in the quiet consistency of their everyday routines, like family Bible time.

I love the fact that Marie never breaks down in front of her kids. Even when her mind keeps creating scenarios about her husband, even when her heart starts to crack from not knowing Luke’s hidden plan, she tries her hardest to stay present for them. Gosh… picturing myself in Marie’s shoes, being a stoic mama, already feels challenging. But the author is not just imagining and daydreaming like me. She brings it all into a well-crafted story.

This is what I call a soft read, a book that touches my soul in the gentlest way possible. It starts soft, escalates so softly, and ends so soft and sweet.

The exhaustion of mothering three kids is narrated in a straightforward and soothing way, without turning into any overwhelming tension that feels too heavy for readers. The worries, the slow fading trust of a wife who doesn’t know what her husband is doing, are poured very gently into the story. Everything is shown through scenes that capture tiredness and suspicion without overexpression. You will see a portrayal of everyday family life, without explosive fights or arguments, yet still carrying a quiet, one-sided shift underneath it all.

The story follows the life of Marie and Luke. Marie is a mom of three boys, a full-time housewife, while Luke is a brickworker dad.
Marie is tired every single day from taking care of kids. Her constant exhaustion makes her lose interest in painting, something that used to be her sanctuary.

Spotting her husband at a restaurant with a composed-looking woman is the last thing Marie ever wants. Her heart slowly begins to break, and her mind cannot stop speculating. Suspicion rises, trust starts to fade. But she believes in love… the love her husband has always given her. So she stays quiet, even when it means hurting herself more.

Luke, on the other hand, notices Marie’s loss of interest in painting since becoming a mother. He wants to change that. He wants to build a space for her to return to who she is as Marie, not just as a mom of three. Luke will do anything, even if it takes a lot to fix an old building. Even if it means leaving early and coming home late. He wants to surprise her. But can he keep something this big hidden without getting caught?
