The Other Side of the Road

Hazel Hutchinson went to South Africa in 1956 looking for a good life in a new country. Instead she met and fell in love with black South African writer and political activist, Alfred Hutchinson. South Africa then was no place for a mixed race relationship so they made the hazardous journey across Africa to Ghana. Alfred told the story of his journey in Road to Ghana, recently republished by Penguin Books. In The Other Side of the Road Hazel tells her side of the story; a story of love, of racial prejudice and alienation set against the background of the turbulent 1960s.

Read Letter D.

I enjoyed this one more than I thought I would. The twist at the end was definitely redeeming, and it is hard to get a good one in a short story. I was fairly worried for most of the last quarter that it was going to be straight forward - creepy dude but the last few minutes (I listened on audible) turned it around, and the final decision made by our MC was an added bonus.

- collection note, not this book specifically -
This is only the second story in this short reads collection I've read but I'm a bit worried that the 'theme' will prove too closed and it is just a collection filled with morally questionable MCs. Which, I don't terribly mind, but I so like to read/listen about decent folks here and there too and was hoping for a slightly more diverse collection, but who knows maybe book #3 will prove me wrong.
