Thirty years after the near-extinction of mankind, groups of survivors live in small numbers behind fortified walls. These homes are called forts, and armed guards keep a lookout from on high, protecting their small civilisation from the nocturnal infected and roaming gangs of bandits that threaten their existence.
Only the runners leave the protection of the forts. Kara is fast; she's never settled for a life behind walls and chooses to do supply runs between the forts on foot. She longs for life on the road when she and her family used to drive around as guns for hire in a large armoured vehicle called a rover, before her father and brothers settled for fort life.
When an SOS is sent out from her lover's fort, she will stop at nothing to save her friends. Her journey is perilous, and my heart was in my mouth on many occasions as she encountered marauders and the infected within the city's crumbling buildings.
As she narrowly escapes many near-death encounters, could a fanatical cult of survivors be her salvation and offer her a new way of life, or is there more to the mindlessly infected than she could ever have imagined?
I didn't just read this book; I lived it! Kara is a force to be reckoned with. This book is so well-written that it's an experience. I could vividly imagine every scene!
For lovers of apocalyptic stories, fans of The Walking Dead or The World Abides, you will devour this amazing book. Five stars just don't seem enough. I loved it!
