Hidden away in a dusty box for years, waiting, biding its time, a plain green book is mailed to a psychiatric hospital. Alice shouldn't have opened this book, but she did, and now it listens and manipulates, bending her to its will, unseen but definitely heard.
Dr Alice Grant is nearing burnout as she works in the understaffed psychiatric unit of a hospital. The book has chosen her; she's special, but she's not the only one it will mess with. Her patients, especially one with DID, fixate on the book, and each personality endures devastating horrors because of it.
The hospital erupts into chaos as Alice walks a tightrope, trying to figure out what's happening, retain her career, and care for her patients. The patients spiral as the book delights in watching, waiting, and appearing at every turn.
The book is a fusion of horror and psychological terror told in both third and first-person narratives. I particularly enjoyed reading the book's perspective chapters as the humour was both deliciously dark and razor-sharp.
