The House in the Cerulean Sea is whimsical, heartfelt, and quietly powerful. The premise sounds chaotic on paper—an Antichrist, a wyvern, a blob with questionable morals—but the story itself unfolds gently, with humor and tenderness at its core.

Linus Baker is the kind of protagonist you don’t expect to root for… until you absolutely do. His tightly wound, rule-following existence makes his transformation all the more satisfying. Watching him step onto Marsyas Island and slowly unravel his fears (and his government-issued worldview) is honestly the magic of the book.

Arthur Parnassus? A soft-spoken, steadfast icon. The chemistry between him and Linus builds in a way that feels organic and sweet rather than rushed. And the children—especially Lucy (yes, that Lucy)—completely steal the show. They’re mischievous, lovable, and far more human than the world gives them credit for.

The pacing is a touch slow in places, which is why it lands at four stars instead of five for me. But the message about found family, prejudice, and choosing love over fear is delivered with so much heart that it lingers long after the final page.

It’s cozy fantasy with bite. A story about choosing kindness when the world expects cruelty. And honestly? We need more of that.

Why did I wait so long to read this? What a funny, cute read! Surprisingly, not being a huge fan of magical realism or fantasy, this book has made it to my top favorite reads. I am so going to dive into more from this author.
