The Practical Anxious Attachment, Somatic Therapy, and Vagus Nerve Guide
~Elise Hart
Have you ever felt like your anxiety comes out of nowhere and takes over the entire day? Prompting your brain to overthink everything, anticipating rejection from everyone around you, having a breakdown if someone isn't as connected with you as you want them to be in the moment. If that's the case, The Practical Anxious Attachment, Somatic Therapy, and Vagus Nerve Guide will feel like someone has knocked down the wall that blocks all control over your anxiety.
Hart presents us with the exact type of approach she promises in the title: practical. You won't be trudging through another droning on and on of useless chatter and feel-good affirmations promised to “fix" all that is wrong with you. Instead, a practical roadmap that guides readers through three sections written in laymen's terms instead of medical jargon no one can understand, along with day-to-day strategies to help overcome that anxious attachment that seems to rule one's life with a vengeance.
With the book being separated into three main parts, it's clear Hart focused on making structure and organization a priority. We then get science presented to us in clear, understandable terms using diagrams and metaphors to help what you cover stick with you. Providing real exercises that work, the book really stands out. Most exercises can be completed in ten minutes or less, inconspicuously to avoid embarrassment while never implying you are “broken" or need to be “fixed.”
I’ve found this to be one of the first books that I was able to put to immediate use. With both a science-based and lived-experience approach, the tools within are quick to put to into action the same day you read it.
If you have been through therapy – talking to a psychologist, CBT, DBT, ACT, etc – with little to no results, then this book might just be your ray of hope to overcoming anxiety and the stigma surrounding it.
So, if you plan on buying one self-help book this year, I highly recommend The Practical Anxious Attachment, Somatic Therapy, and Vagus Nerve Guide to be the one!
