The Fake Love Trap - How Romance Scammers Reel You In – From Friend Requests to Private Message Apps

~Miranda Wheeler

The Fake Love Trap is both an emotional and financial journey into the world of romance scams - and, more importantly, steps you can take to protect yourself from becoming a victim.

I reluctantly admit, I’m at the age where I teeter (depending on the day) between being sensible enough to know better and yet potentially vulnerable enough to fall for someone reaching out with what seems like good intentions. (Yes, I just admitted I’m getting older.) What worries me even more than myself, though, is my elderly father, who continues to text, email, and scroll social media all willy nilly. I never want to take away his independence, but the thought of him being targeted by scammers terrifies me.

This book was EVERYTHING for me!

Wheeler does a phenomenal job of guiding readers through the psychology behind romance scams - how scammers develop their strategies, gain access to our lives, and manipulate human emotions to their advantage. She highlights countless warning signs, breaks down the tactics, and explains the wide variety of platforms these scammers use. A few of those methods genuinely surprised me.

What I appreciate most is how Wheeler arms us with practical knowledge. She reminds us that scammers aren’t necessarily smarter than us - they’ve just mastered emotional exploitation. And while The Fake Love Trap focuses on romance scams, the insights can easily be applied to other types of fraud.

Perhaps the most important takeaway: if you do fall victim, you are far from alone. There’s no shame in being tricked. The key is to act quickly - to recover what you can, prevent further losses, and protect others from suffering the same fate.

I can’t recommend The Fake Love Trap highly enough. This isn’t just a book for the elderly or the naïve—it’s a must-read resource for anyone with something valuable to protect.

As always, all opinions and reviews are of my own volition. I have not been promised any compensation, current or future, by the author or publisher for a fair and honest review.
