The Lion Within

Kay Elem

Kay Elem’s The Lion Within is a haunting, heartbreaking read. Fast-paced yet deeply engaging throughout, this beautifully crafted short story serves as a powerful cautionary tale regarding the devastating consequences of neglecting physical or mental health. Through excellent, evocative writing, the narrative captures a striking, urgent reality by holding a mirror up to the intense pressures currently found in sports at every level. It is a great read with an even greater message. If you are looking for an emotional book that will stay on your mind long after you finish the final page, this is an absolute must-read.

Family Tree

Sara Lea

Y’all, Family Tree is a slow-burn thriller that creeps in like a summer storm rolling across a Mississippi field—quiet at first, heavy in the air, and you just know something’s about to break.

Grace gets that one phone call and heads straight back to Bleeding Hearts Valley, the place her mother warned her never to return to. What starts as sorting through her mother’s things turns into uncovering old letters and journals that feel thick with secrets. You can practically feel the dust and tension clinging to every page as she digs deeper, even when she knows she probably shouldn’t.

The deeper she goes, the more tangled it gets—family secrets, buried truths, and a legacy that might not be worth protecting. The writing is moody and deliberate, letting everything simmer until it finally hits, soft but sharp.

It’s not fast-paced, but if you like your thrillers with atmosphere, emotion, and secrets that stick to your bones like humidity, this one delivers.

What The Storm Broke

Nicole M. King

This book isn’t just something you read. It’s something you experience.

What the Storm Broke pulls you into Myla’s mind, where thoughts loop, questions linger, and nothing comes together in a straight line... just like real life. If you’re into true crime or love picking apart details as new pieces come in, this will feel eerily familiar.

It’s less about solving a mystery and more about what it feels like when the truth gets closer than you expected.

Unsettling, reflective, and hard to shake.

The Podcast Killer Book 1 of the Podcast Murders

C.K. Smith

The Podcast Killer by C.K. Smith is a gripping, dark, and thought-provoking read that pulls you into a city drowning in corruption—where a podcast becomes far more than storytelling… it becomes vengeance.

Smith does an incredible job of weaving together the dualities of Dominic Graves and Ethan Cole, creating a layered, complex character whose internal conflict adds depth to an already intense narrative. There’s a constant undercurrent of dread throughout the book, a feeling that justice has long since slipped through the cracks, leaving behind a system that protects the powerful instead of the innocent.

The story doesn’t just focus on one thread; it builds a web. From the deeply rooted secrets within the Chicago PD to the involvement of Detective Reynolds, Detective Daniels, and Chief Vargas, each layer reveals just how far the corruption spreads. The mayor’s role only deepens that sense of systemic failure, and even the inclusion of figures within the high school shows that no part of the city remains untouched.

What makes this story even more compelling is the role of Liam and his friends. Their involvement adds heart and urgency, showing how even the younger generation refuses to sit back while their city crumbles. They bring a sense of resilience and hope, balancing the darkness with determination.

One of the strongest aspects of this book is how relatable it feels. Beneath the suspense and thriller elements lie themes that echo real-world issues—corruption, abuse of power, and the fight for truth. It’s impossible not to draw parallels to today’s society, which makes the story hit even harder.

The only reason this isn’t a full five-star read is that, at times, the shifting perspectives can feel a bit disjointed. There are moments where it’s unclear who is speaking or which point of view the story is coming from, which can briefly pull you out of the experience.

That said, this is absolutely a book you’ll want to read quickly and without long breaks. The closer together you read it, the more cohesive and immersive the story becomes.

By the end, I couldn’t just close the book and walk away—I was left restless, replaying every choice, every betrayal, every question of what justice really means, with this lingering tension in my chest that hasn’t let go… and I’m already desperate to dive into the second book in the series, The Final Podcast. I received a copy of this book from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I don't read a *ton* of thrillers but I really liked this one because even though you know right away who the bad guys are, the story is all about jow to deal with the problems that come out of it. It's tense, suspenseful and has great characters. But I kinda wanted that ambiguity at the end to be answered lol.
